A Yuletide Walk Through Roger’s Gardens

It can be tough sometimes to decorate the home for Christmas.  Sure, you have the same classic items that have dressed your home in December year after year, and they always have meshed perfectly with the aesthetic that you have created in your home from January through November.  However, when the Christmas season arrives, it always brings with it a desire to purchase brand spanking new accessories, baubles, and other items of sparkly yuletide goodness to add to your seasonal look...Read More

An OC Fair Assessment

As is the case every July, thousands of people will flock to the Orange County fairgrounds in Costa Mesa to partake in the usual mélange of deep fried junk food, midway games, rickety rides, and the petting of noble beasts.  Chances are great that you will be one of the patrons.  As such, you will undoubtedly be confronted with the notion that the parcel of land that hosts the rustic-tinged event may be developed for other means in the future, as reminders of the passionate drive behind keeping the space in its current state will most likely be as visible to each fairgoer as they have been since the recommendation to sell off the property came down from Sacramento in May of 2009...Read More >>

Living Richly (Without Being Rich)

A little while back, I came up with an idea of showcasing some of the more opulent ways that Orange County residents can spend their hard-earned money, which is not coincidentally what you will eventually read.  My thought process behind this theme was one of a rather logical nature; after all, the OC is home to some of the nation’s most affluent zip codes, so activities that are heavily draped in extravagance really should be discussed at some level.  However, I initially approached this topic with a healthy dose of trepidation.   Seeing as how the current recession has strangulated the nation to the point that the haves and the have-nots have been respectively segmented into bourgeoisie and peasants within certain circles, I was a bit nervous that discussing high-end flights of fancy would cause some people to instantly brand me as a bit of an elitist buffoon; or even worse, a low-rent, hack version of Gwyneth Paltrow... Pacific Symphony and Komen Orange County Unite for "Music for a Cure"
Pacific Symphony and the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure have joined forces for “Music for the Cure,” a unique collaboration with a common goal of raising awareness about breast cancer—a devastating disease that affects one in eight women nationally. The Symphony’s final concert of the summer, “Tchaikovsky Spectacular,” takes on a decidedly pink hue, when it shines the spotlight on the importance of finding a cure. Taking place at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m., the concert culminates with Tchaikovsky’s triumphant and climatic “1812” Overture—in honor of those who have survived breast cancer. To purchase tickets, call the Symphony at (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org/Komen. Read More >>
